The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is proud to announce a tribute it initiated and coordinated on October 13, honoring the legacy and work of Fernando Garcia Zalvidea, considered one of the five most important businessmen in Quintana Roo.
Garcia was a pioneer in the tourism industry and one of the most iconic entrepreneurs in the development of the destination. After he graduated from Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana with a degree in engineering, he entered the travel industry. His part-time passion for travel turned into a full-time career when he founded Best Day Travel in 1984, and subsequently in 1997, Real Resorts.
Garcia was also a philanthropist, who in 2001, helped create the Ciudad de la Alegria foundation in Cancun. The foundation works to rescue, rehabilitate and reintegrate women, children, the elderly and sick who live in extreme poverty and have no access to basic education and healthcare.
This tribute served as a kickoff event to the opening ceremony of Cancun Travel Mart. During the tribute, a video was shown highlighting Garcia’s life and the legacies he left behind. Jesus Almaguer, CEO of the Cancun CVB announced the creation of the Fernando Garcia Zalvidea Scholarship Fund and the Fernando Garcia Zalvidea Internship, which will help pave the way for future pioneers of the tourism industry. These programs were founded by Almaguer and Tirso Ordaz Coral, Dean of The Universidad del Caribe. The scholarship and internship will serve as lasting tributes to Garcia´s dedication to the region’s economic growth via tourism, and help local students learn and immerse themselves in the dynamic world of travel. During the tribute, Almaguer announced that this year’s edition of the Cancun Travel Mart would be dedicated in honor of Fernando Garcia Zalvidea.
The opening tribute was initiated by Roberto Borge Angulo, Governor of Quintana Roo; with a live video stream message from Rodolfo Lopez Negrete, Director General of the Mexico Tourism Board.
The CVB invited tour operators and wholesalers from the U.S., Canada, South America and Europe to attend the tribute, pay their respects and celebrate all that Garcia did for Cancun and the region. Other speakers at the event included Ray Snisky, representing U.S. wholesalers; Bruce Wardinski, CEO of Playa Resorts; Roberto Cintron, President of the Cancun Hotel Association; Elyse Elkin, founder of Exclusive Group Travel; Julian Balbuena, Director General of Best Day Travel; and Jesus Almaguer. Garcia’s widow, Lolita de Garcia, closed the event by thanking the industry for all their words of recognition. A cocktail followed the tribute.
