In 2007 the Mayakoba Golf Classic made golf history when it became the first PGA TOUR event to ever be contested outside of the United States and Canada. Much to the joy of players and fans alike, this is now the third year the PGA Tour will come to Mayakoba near Cancun, Mexico. El Camaleon Golf Club at Mayakoba has committed to hosting the PGA tour each year until 2012.

This year is set to be the best so far with 132 professional golfers arriving in Cancun to take place in Mexico’s only PGA Tour event. Fred Funk was the first Mayakoba Golf Classic winner in 2007 and Brian Gay (66-67-62-69-264) was the winner in 2008 and is now the defending champion. The purse for this tournament is a staggering $3.6 million dollars.

The tournament will take place from the 24th February until the 1st March 2009 at the El Camaleon Golf Club at the Mayakoba Resort. The resort is located 35 miles south of Cancun in the heart of the Riviera Maya.
El Camaleón Golf Club at the Mayakoba resort is Greg Norman’s latest masterpiece. The 7,039-yard layout is unique - not just to México but to the entire world of golf. The course bends through three distinct landscapes - tropical jungle, dense mangroves, and oceanfront stretches of sand with holes bisected by massive limestone canals. There is even a cenote, a massive, ancient cavern common to the area, in the heart of the opening fairway.

While the course is a amazing, the surrounding golf amenities are equally as stunning. There is an impressive Mayan - influenced clubhouse rising above the 18th green, and the resort has a unique canal system where golfers can step out of their rooms and into a boat, which will ferry them to the first tee.

Gates open to the public on the 24th February at 6.00 am each morning Tuesday - Friday and at 8.00 am on Saturday and Sunday. You can buy either daily or weekly tickets, and you can even book an all-inclusive package if you wish to stay at the resort during the tournament.
