02/04/2013Cancun’s Second International Fishing Tournament Takes Place April 26 - 28

– April not only brings spring to Cancun, but it will also attract hundreds of participants to Cancun’s Second International Fishing Tournament on April 26 – 28.

Over 300 competitors and 100 boats will take to the crystal clear waters of the Mexican Caribbean for Cancun’s Second Annual International Fishing Tournament. Eighty boat crews have already confirmed attendance for this tournament and confirmations are expected to grow in the next few weeks. Grand prizes for this tournament will total 600,000 pesos, approximately $48,000 USD.

Cancun is one of the best sport fishing hotspots in the world and catches vary season by season. From February to April, top catches include kingfish, barracuda, small sharks, grouper and blue marlin. From April to August you can find sailfish, tuna and mahi-mahi. Barracuda, snapper and mackerel are found September through February.

Organizers for this tournament include the Cancun Marine Association (ANC), the Cancun Hotel Association (CHA), the Mexican Association of Travel Agents (AMAV) and the municipality of Benito Juarez through the Municipal Committee of Youth and Sports.

For those that want to take a break from fishing and wish to view nature’s fastest fish in their natural habitat can do so using specialty tour operators. Now until June, sailfish flock to the waters off Cancun in vast numbers to feed on the schools of tuna that migrate through the area. Excursions are available to any that wish to snorkel with these graceful and fast fish as they dance through the clear waters to catch their favorite meal.
