11/06/2012The Westin Resort & Spa Cancun Receives the MARTI Recognition

The Westin Resort & Spa Cancun received by initiative of tourism of the Mesoamerican Reef, (MARTI for its acronym in English), a recognition for its participation in the implementation of the system of environmental management, which seeks to ensure that the natural wealth that attract millions of tourists each year to the region of the Mesoamerican Reef are kept and preserved for the benefit of present and future generations.

The Mesoamerican Reef tourism initiative is a voluntary organization whose aim is to directly advise in the implementation, evaluation, maintenance and possible revision of conservation projects, carried out by MARTI partners. Its mission is to preserve the natural heritage of the Mesoamerican Reef system and its biodiversity, demonstrating that human societies can live and develop in harmony with nature.

The Westin Resort & Spa Cancun has been characterized by creating and participating in alternatives that will allow the rational use of natural resources and sustainable practices in the tourism operations, as in the case of its recycling program, which involves the reuse of materials from aluminum, used fat in cooking, plastic and, of course, the reduction of paper prints using electronic files.

The actions that are currently carried out in Westin are changing the way of heating water, which represents a saving of 690 tons of C02, annually; as well as changing shower heads and faucets for water to reduced flow devices. In recent years, the change of 50% of the lighting of the hotel has been a pocket saver, change of recycle bins in public areas and rooms and has been composting the organic waste from kitchens to fertilize green areas.

Another action taken by Westin is Green Meetings, where the hotel offers meetings to develop ways to maximize productivity for tools offered by the brand for customers’ meetings by selecting and organizing nearby attendees supply stations, in which through the centralization of pads, pens, candy, and water; guests will have more space for their own things and thus hotels may also increase productivity. The results of Green Meetings have shown a 14% improvement in productivity and a reduction of 24% in annual consumption.

In early 2009, Starwood projected a set of initiatives based on the sustainability of the environment, eco-design and “green” Administration with the aim of promoting energy conservation, water conservation and recycling in hotel properties. These initiatives are still updating guidance for partners in conservation efforts.

This new award is one further demonstration of the spirit of collaboration and commitment that The Westin Resort & Spa Cancun has with the environment.
