07/05/20126th Annual Copa del Rey International Polo Tournament Comes to Mexican Caribbean May 17-20, 2012

The exotic tropical ambiance of the Mexican Caribbean will pulse with galloping hoof beats, when the 6th Annual Copa del Rey International Polo Tournament takes place May 17-20, 2012, at El Rey Polo Country Club in Puerto Morelos, less than 20 minutes from the Cancun International Airport.

Set amidst a lush Mayan jungle, alive with spider monkeys to Toucan birds, the regulation polo field will bring six teams face-to-face at a multi-day competition, ranked as a 4-6 goal event this year. Showcasing players from the United States, Canada, Argentina, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Ireland , and of course, Mexico (where the sport was introduced by British miners in 1880), the Tournament has become one of the top annual social events on the Cancun-Riviera Maya area.

Since 2007, when the world-famous polo legend Carlos Gracida (Queen Elizabeth’s favorite) played in the inaugural Copa del Rey (El Rey Cup), the Tournament has brought the thrill of polo and an alluring equestrian lifestyle to a region already acclaimed for its beaches, water sports, resorts, and archeology.

With NEXTEL being the title sponsor this year other sponsors include Hard Rock Hotels, Mazda, Volaris Airlines, Argentine polo apparel maker Cuatro Tacos, In Riviera Magazine, Now Resorts, Scappino and E! Entertainment tv. The El Rey Cup is a five-day fest of fashion shows, parties, and growing traditions, mixed with the adrenalin-charged game of polo. Friday evening’s Hard Rock Hotel cocktail party will introduce the participating teams followed by a fashion show. These will headline the Tournament’s social events.

Blessed by Mayan priests, the Tournament opens with the soulful call of the conch shell. Dancing, music, and the ritual burning of sage, honor the field, players, horses, and spectators, during a colorful ceremony performed by local Mayans.

5th Annual El Rey Cup Polo Tournament

The only regulation polo field in the Mexican Caribbean, El Rey is located on La Ruta de los Cenotes (the route of the cenotes) between the turquoise waters of Cancun and the beaches of Playa del Carmen. Only six miles from the seaside town of Puerto Morelos, the club is little more than a ferry ride away from the Island of Cozumel. Multiple airlines serving destinations around the world, offer nonstop and direct flights to nearby Cancun International Airport. Just one hour from the Club, are the beachfront ruins of the archeological site of Tulum and the stunning Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Chichen Itza, which is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, as well as UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about two hours from the Club.

Open year-round, El Rey Polo Country Club makes polo a daily option for enjoying both saddle time and surf time while visiting the Yucatan peninsula. Beginning to advanced polo lessons (with a pro), training packages, and practice sessions are available through the club, along with its seasoned stable of horses. Now in Phase 1 of developing 72 Eco Residences and Estate Lots (of 1-5 acres), the polo field is situated at center stage, flanked by a clubhouse with restaurant and banquet facilities. Polo games can be viewed from the upper level outlook deck at the clubhouse or even from its infinity pool.

El Rey’s Phase 2 development, which is planned to get underway later this year, will feature a second regulation polo field, 50 residential (1 acre) lots, a second club house, and a full service spa with overnight bungalows that will be available to guests. A strong ecological focus is central to El Rey’s equestrian operations and residential development.

The 5th Annual Copa del Rey International Polo Tournament is open to the public. Admission is free. Food and beverages will be available for purchase on site. For more information, please contact El Rey Polo Country Club at: 52 998 802 1609 or 52 998 185 4113.
