16/02/2011Mayakoba Golf Classic E-Notes for Feb. 14, 2011

• Representing Mexico: Some of Mexico’s best players of the year are currently in the field. Tournament organizers have invited Efrén Serna, Jr., the highest Mexican finisher in the Mexico Open, Jose de Jesús Rodríguez, winner of the year-end Gira Negra Modelo series and Oscar Serna winner of the PGA de Mexico 36-hole Qualifier held at Bosque Real Country Club in Mexico City. Also, veteran PGA TOUR member Esteban Toledo has also accepted a sponsor exemption and will compete in his fifth Mayakoba Golf Classic.

• Venezuela National Hero Coming to Mexico: Jhonattan Vegas, winner of the Bob Hope Classic in January, will be making his first trip to the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Vegas, a 26-year-old rookie on the PGA TOUR, is also the first Venezuelan to play on Tour. When he won several weeks ago, his victory was celebrated throughout his country.

• Congrats to Tom Lehman: Tom Lehman, a five-time winner on the PGA TOUR, won his first Champions Tour event Sunday in Florida. Lehman will be competing in the Mayakoba Golf Classic for the second time. In 2009 he finished tied for 49th.

• Golf Course Fact I: Did you know that the grass on the teeing grounds, the fairways, the rough and the greens at El Camaleón Golf Course is called Sea Isle I Seashore Paspalum?

• Golf Course Fact II: El Camaleón Golf Course has 40 acres of fairways and 35 sand bunkers.

• The Winning Score: As we approach the fifth anniversary of the Mayakoba Golf Classic, it is interesting to compare the winning score of the previous four tournaments: 2007 Fred Funk, 266 (-14); 2008 Brian Gay, 264 (-16); 2009 Mark Wilson, 267 (-13); 2010 Cameron Beckman, 269 (-11).

• Quotable: How about the golfing public out there? How did they treat you? CAMERON BECKMAN: “Oh, great. Very nice. You could tell they enjoyed watching us, and hopefully they liked having us here. It’s a pleasure for us to come down here and be in your country, and hopefully we’ll get to do it for a long time.”
