28/07/2010Cancun Welcomes World Renown Cycling Greats During The Cancun Cycling Challenge 2010

The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) held a press conference today, welcoming Ivan Basso, the winner of the Giro d’Italia, Oscar Freire, three-time world cycling champion, and brothers Andy and Frank Schleck, who are mong the 30 professional cyclists invited to participate in Cancun’s Cycling Challenge 2010 this October.

The Cancun CVB, the makers of the Vuelta Chihuahua and the International Mountain Biking Association in Cancun, held a press conference at the Great Parnassus Hotel where they announced that Cancun will welcome nearly one thousand cyclists from around the world, who will get to ride alongside some of the world’s best cyclists in honor of the Mexican Red Cross.

The Cancun Cycling Challenge will take start at Puerto Cancun with a scenic route through its mega-yacht marina, the golf course designed by Tom Weiskoof, resorts, luxury condominiums and of course, the beautiful views of Cancun. The tour will stretch over a circuit of about 6.21 miles, with three categories to compete in: 18.64, 37.28 or 62.13 miles.

The registration fee, which includes a shirt, a commemorative vase and a First Aid ID bracelet, is $450 pesos (approx. $35 dollars) if paid by September 1st. Entries may be submitted to the Elite Cyclery, located in Cancun or on their Web site. (Pay Pal or credit card)

Among the confirmed professional cyclists are: Ivan Basso from the Liquigas team who recently won the 2010 Giro d’Italia; Also, Roman Kreuziger (Czech Republic), Peter Sagan (Slovakia), Manuel Quinziato (Italy), Daniel Oss (Italy) and Juraj Sagan (Slovakia). Andy and Frank Schleck from the Saxo Bank team and Alexander Kolobnev (Russia) from the Katyusha team will also be participating. Additionally, Oscar Freire (Spain), winner of world championships in 1999, 2001 and 2004, and Rui Costa (Portugal) from the Spanish team Caisse d’Epargne will attend.
