Hotel Gran Melia is reaping the benefits of the recent growth the meetings and conventions tourism sector has experienced and as a result ignited hotel occupancy in Cancun. This Wednesday, June 10th, the hotel will inaugurate its meeting facilities by hosting the National Reunion of Managers of Technological Universities with 80 participants and sessions that will continue until Friday, June 12th. The Gran Melia will also receive 200 participants for the Second Pediatric Forum, organized by an international laboratory that for the first time has chosen Cancun for their June 19-21 sessions. In addition next month, the Gran Melia will serve as the host to the XX Pan-American and International Neurological Surgery Conference, where more than 700 specialists will gather on July 19-25 in an event organized by the Mexican Neurosurgery Society.

The white turtles return to one of their favorite nests, the Meridien Cancun Resort & Spa, a hotel certified by Green Globe that will be receiving the offspring of these turtles who are at risk of being extinct. A constructive chat with the entire hotel staff has prepared them to receive the turtles, who last year made 33 nests on its beaches and sent 1,612 litters into the ocean—100 more than in 2007, a number that qualified the hotel to receive the Federal Maritime and Terrestrial Zone recognition. Through programs such as Protection of the Marine Turtle, Le Meridien Cancun Resort & Spa promotes sustainable tourism while awaiting the arrival of these turtles that have chosen their beaches as breeding grounds.

Total reactivation of the meetings and conventions sector in Cancun
This year, the Cancun Center’s event calendar is completely full. The schedule for June includes: Exphotel Cancun 2009 (from the 17th through 19th of June), which will be celebrating its 13th edition of this showcase of international providers for the hotel, restaurant, bar and discotheque industries. The following month, on July 12 through the 17th, the XXIX International Conference on Phenomena in Ionized Gases will be holding their meetings, and from the 17th-19th of the month, the National Herbalife Convention will hold its celebration. In August, Cancun will be host to the Expo Deconarq, with focus on construction, decoration and architecture. Kicking-off the month of November will be a series of medical events starting off with the 60º Mexican Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics, which ends on the fifth of the month; the 21st-24th of the month, the III Mesoamerican and the Caribbean Pediatric Congress and the XII National Congress of Pediatrics (CONAPEME) will be taking place. The last month of 2009, December, closes the calendar of the Cancun Center with the Global Conference to Combat Falsification and Pirating (taking place December 1-3) and the 40th Union World Conference on Lung Health, being celebrated from December 3-7.

As part of the growth and excellence of the meetings & conventions tourism sector in Cancun, its Convention and Visitors Bureau, participated in the Meeting Place Mexico 2009 (MPM), a trade show for meeting planners that took place in Puerto Vallarta from June 7-9th, where among the attendees were specialists from Europe, the U.S. and Mexico. Moreover, the MPM 2009 offered the best destination for the realization of events, business opportunities specialized in incentives for first rate buyers, airline representatives, tourism bureaus, convention centers, hotel groups, event planners, resorts, spas and technology providers, among others.

Baseball: a sporting event for both residents and visitors
The baseball team Los Tigres de Quintana Roo (The Quintana Roo Tigers) gave a show this past Sunday during the Mexican Baseball League game at the stadium “Beto Avila” in Cancun as part of the “Juego de las Estrellas” (Game of the Stars). Thousands of fans enjoyed a sporting event success that contributed to the vast tourism offer in Cancun. The gathering lasted more than 9 hours and served as a way to show the excellent behavior of the enthusiastic fans that were present, which as a result, garnered recognition from the organizers of the event and the board of directors of Los Tigres de Quintana Roo.
