23/09/2008The 4th Xel-Ha Expression Forum Underway

For the fourth year running, Cancun will be host to the Xel-Ha Expression Forum, held from September 25th to 27th, a stage open to the free manifestations of local artists, through a variety of art forms: painting, sculpture, music, dance, and photography. The Forum will once again be held at Kukulcan Plaza.

Upon presenting the convocation before the media, Cecilia Garro Wong, marketing manager for Xel-Ha Natural Wonder, declared that this year will witness the Expression Forum’s consolidation as a platform for artists’ talents, against an unfortunate background of scarce space for promoting and supporting artistic expressions.

The central theme for this year’s event is “Humankind Coexisting with Nature”, and the artists’ work means to relate to this subject in a diversity of ways. A part of the event will consist in the exhibition of works on the behalf of artists who wish to make themselves known, hopefully leading to their commercialisation. Another much-expected portion of the event will feature the exhibition of the 21 best images of the National Photography Contest sponsored by Xel-Ha and Epson, also related to the afore-mentioned subject.

The terms for participating in the exhibitions feature several points, amongst these: artists must live in Quintana Roo state, have at least two years of verifiable experience, and take part in one of three categories: painting, sculpture, or photography.

Additionally, the event will host several artistic and cultural activities to which all Cancun’s population is invited: music, dance, theatre, and children’s workshops will be presented free of charge to offer edifying entertainment alternatives for adults and youths.

For example, theatre presentations will be showing “Poema para Tres”, written and directed by Saul Enriquez, described as “a play that engages the subject of love in modern-day couples, along with the conflicts that we have all been through at some stage in our lives; it could be anyone’s story” by one of the lead actresses, Angelica Garcia, from the Nuncamerlot Theatre Group.

Also showing at the Forum will be The Golden Agers, a retro musical group that specialises in interpreting popular period pieces from the big-band era, such as ‘crooners’ Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Nat King, and female voices such as Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington. “An aspect that sets us apart from other groups is our tendency to play songs originally born in Spanish, and whose translations into English became worldwide hits,” remarked Rudy Garcia, director for the The Golden Agers. He quoted songs in the group’s repertoire such as “Perfidia”, “Besame Mucho”, “Cuando Vuelva a Tu Lado”, “Cuando Calienta el Sol”, and “Solamente Una Vez.

The Expression Forum once again featured widely-known artists such as Juan Carlos Cisneros, sculptor Roberto Diaz, and photographer Antonio Diaz, among others, as well as the contemporary dance group Art Cro, and the distinguished choir singers of Adagio.
