01/09/2008Transport your Mind, Body and Spirit to the highest level of Well-being

- With state- of- the- art technology, exclusive treatments, and the most specialized therapists, Cancun has become one of the top spa destinations worldwide.

Mayan techniques are the most popular as they are the only ones that incorporate ritualistic features. One example is the treatment with Balche, a sacred drink of the Mayans used to connect the spirit with the cosmos and nature while also used to cure certain diseases. This treatment involves an exfoliating body cleanse with brown sugar and cinnamon, followed by a relaxing massage with Mayan herbs and Balche, helping the body to achieve maximum relaxation.

Another treatment prized by the Mayans is that of the three elements: gold, jade and flowers. This ritual begins with an exfoliation using gold and flower essence, followed by a relaxing body wrap to energize and nourish the skin while a subtle facial removes impurities and refines texture. The session ends with an oil application made of the three elements, leaving the skin bright, hydrated and completely rejuvenated. You can enjoy these techniques and many others in the Spas at JW Marriott, Hilton, Ritz Carlton and Hyatt Regency hotel among others.

The first and only thalassotherapy Spa in North America is found in the Paraiso de la Bonita hotel in Puerto Morelos, just 25 minutes from Cancun. The word Thalassotherapy is derived from the Greek word thalassa which means “ocean,” and therapy which means “healing.” This treatment is one of the oldest in history and is based on the use of multiple sea elements, like sea water, seaweed, mud, plankton and other substances extracted from the ocean depths. These materials are applied through different techniques to prevent and improve certain skin conditions as well as those of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and nervous systems. Thalassotherapy offers anti-cellulite, anti-stress, and cosmetic treatments as well as weight loss and improved circulation programs, among others.

The most advanced technology for holistic treatments, the Meridian Stress Assessment System, arrived in the Mexican Caribbean and is used to fully assess a person’s health and energy balance. The process involves the electrical conductivity in sensitive points of the skin, also known as meridian points, usually located in the hands and feet. This innovative system helps achieve a balanced state of energy and also identifies and detects toxicity levels and their impacts on organ function. This wonderful method is offered at Ceiba del Mar Spa Resort.

The Aqua Spa hotel offers special treatments based on multi-sensory relaxation techniques mastered in Sweden, Australia, Polynesia, Morocco and India. This Spa specializes in Watsu, a massage treatment focused on specific pressure points on the body while it floats in hot water and is surrounded by complete silence. Another treatment is Le Siesté, where seaweed vitamins and minerals penetrate every pore of the skin while submerged in water at 97 degrees Fahrenheit. A truly regenerating experience.

In Cancun, visitors can enjoy original body wraps, each created for specific treatments. The Tequila wrap energizes and stimulates the body with a fabulous massage using distilled Tequila, followed by an Aloe Vera and Agave wrap.

The exotic grape is not a new drink, but rather a different type of body wrap based on wine derivatives. With this wrap, the skin regains brightness and vitality, releasing stress and giving it an extraordinary texture. Additionally, chocolate, besides being delicious, has multiple benefits for delicate skin types. It is an immediate relief for stinging, itching and burning sensations as it reduces skin temperature while moisturizing. These wraps and many others can be found in most of Cancun’s Spas.

Finally, we cannot forget the authentic pre-Hispanic ritual of Temascal, also known as a steam bath. This experience includes a guide, or shaman, who conducts a series of activities of therapeutic purposes within a volcanic stone sauna. With massages, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, meditation and chanting, the mind, body and soul are purified in an atmosphere of peace and harmony. Palace Resorts and the Westin Resort and Spa are among the Spas that offer this service.
