*Open day in the Butterflies’ house and the Orquids’ Garden of Solferino to celebrate the reconstruction of the butterflies’ greenhouse after Wilma hurricane destroyed it in 2005.

Cancun, Mexico (August 20th, 2008).- The butterflies’ house of the Maya village of Solferino, based in Lazaro Cardena’s municipality, one hour from the tourist epicentre of Cancún, will perform next Saturday, August 23rd, an open day with the aim to spread the environmental resources knowledge and promote a sustainable tourism project developed by the Community-based Alternative Tourism Network Puerta Verde, in collaboration with the NGO Kanché.

This event pursues to guide tourists and inhabitants from the area inside a nature space of 10.700 square feet which has been closed from October 2005 to June 2008 due to the damages provoked by Wilma hurricane. Now, the House opens again with ten different species of butterflies. The Orchids’ Garden, located also in Solferino, want to join this initiative and be part of the open day, so it will be possible to visit both places for free and get to know two amazing nature’s wonders.

In this place, it is possible to see in natural conditions the reproductive cycle of amazing species that live around Yum Balam Natural Protected Area in Solferino village. Solferino is an indigenous population with more than 1.000 inhabitants that dates from 1141 as the most ancient in the ‘Puerta Verde’ area.

The butterflies’ house was born in the 90s thank to the effort of a women group who created the space in a place which was being used as a garbage dump. The land was given according to the right established in the law in order to promote productive projects (Women’s Agricultural and Industrial Union) arranged by women. After some years, the ancient rubbish dump is now a magical spectacle plenty of life, light and colours which is possible to discover doing the ‘Puerta Verde’ route with other 22 different activities.

Visiting “Puerta Verde” allows enjoying experiences such as exploring caves, kayaking on lagoons, visiting a colorful butterflies’ house, camping in the jungle, tasting traditional gastronomy or swimming with the harmless whale shark. Altogether, 23 activities are combinable in many ways: from one day getaways to the whole 4 days and 3 night route. ‘Puerta Verde’ was born with the aim of being an adventure where visitors and hosts share a magical world of traditions and nature.

There are organized tours to ‘Puerta Verde’ from Cancún and Riviera Maya with the NGO Kanché, a non profit organization that brings about sustainable development in rural communities of Quintana Roo and Yucatan states. Now, Cancún and Riviera Maya are the gateway to the ‘Puerta Verde’ adventure, where visitor plays the leading roll of a life-changing journey.
