22/07/2008Plácido Domingo in Chichén Itzá: The Concert of the Thousand Columns

Chichén Itzá, Yucatán(July 2008).-In celebration of its first anniversary as a Wonder of the World and its twenty years of being named a
UNESCO World Heritage, the Mayan city of Chichén Itzá will be the scenario where the tenor Placido Domingo will perform on October 4th, 2008.

“The Concert of the Thousand Columns, Placido Domingo in Chichén Itzá”, will reunite international talents in the legendary archaeological site, testimony of the greatness of the Mayan civilization.
The tenor will present a recital with the Yucatecan master Armando Manzanero at the piano, Puerto Rican soprano Ana María Martínez and under the direction of the American director Eugene Kohn with
the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra.

The final program of the event will be published soon. It is known that Plácido Domingo will sing “Adoro”, theme created by Manzanero. Opera, Zarzuela and songs from the Mexican popular repertory will be part of the recital as well.

The tenor, who in 1957 performed in Yucatán for the first time in his career, will sing for a ten thousand people public, at the same place where Luciano Pavarotti gave his concert Voices In Chichén Itzá, in

“I hope you join me on Saturday, October 4th, at the concert I’ll perform in front of the Pyramid of Kukulcán, in the archaeological site of Chichén Itzá. I’ll see you there”, said Plácido Domingo during the
official presentation of the event, last June 18th.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at Ticketmaster starting late July. The money collected will be donated to the Social Archaeological Fund of Chichén Itzá.
